Hellbox : Sadisticlaw -cd-

Hellbox soittaa perkeleellisen menevää heviä vanhan koulun malliin. Tämä trio aloitti Venom-coveryhtyeenä, ja antaa sen myös kuulua Sadisticlaw-esikoisellaan. Esikuvalle ominainen varhaisthrash-poljento kuljettaa lähes jokaista biisiä, vokalistibasisti Hell D. Satansson rähinöi räkäisen cronosmaisesti ja sanoituksissa pitää tietenkin joka käänteessä mainita ”hell”, ”satan” ja ”evil one”. Tiukasti 20 vuoden takaisissa meiningeissä siis ollaan, mutta ollaan sitä tyylitietoisesti ja asenteella. Kun on kyse Venom-henkisestä metallista, ei musiikki ainakaan ryppyotsaisuudesta kärsi. Hellboxilla on vielä se etu black metalin esi-isään nähden, että se voi paljon tehokkaammin irroitella hevikliseillä nyt, kun ne ovat kaikille tuttuja.

Sadisticlaw tarjoaa kymmenen tulikivenkatkuista rykäisyä manan mailta. Helvetillinen thrash-paahto kääntyy välillä rennompaan Motörhead-rokkaukseen, mikä periaatteessa kertoo jo kaiken musiikista. Eli kapealla sektorilla liikutaan. Vaikka keskitempoisessa They Came From Beneathilla pysähdytäänkin hieman katselemaan maisemia, on levy kokonaisuudessaan varsin puuduttavaa ja yksitoikkoista kaahausta.

Parhaimmillaan Hellbox mäiskii alkupuolen The Huntilla ja Hellholella, jotka ovat loistavia kaljankittausralleja. Viimeinen raita, Hell Rockin’ Machine, taas on täysin turha kertaus kaikesta jo kuullusta. Satanssonin ”hell rokin mäsiin” –tyylinen vokalisointi ei sekään järin vakuuta. Mutta jos perinteinen 80-luvun metalli ja etenkin Venom kiinnostaa, kannattaa ehdottomasti tarkastaa Sadisticlaw.

Alkuaikoinaan 90-luvun loppupuolella Hellbox oli vielä tyylipuhtaan likainen Venom-coverbändi, mutta tämä bändin esikoinen tarjoileekin jo kymmenen biisiä bändin omaa tuotantoa. Minnekään uria uurtaville jazz-linjoille ei kuitenkaan olla lähdetty, vaan bändi tuo juurensa esille ilman häpeää. ”Sadisticlaw” tuuttaa ilmoille viskiltä haisevaa thrash-mausteista rock’n’rollia joka ei kompromisseja tarjoile. Yleensä tällaiset levyt latistuvat pelkäksi yhden kaavan toistamiseksi, mutta ”Sadisticlaw” sisältää onneksi hieman variaatiota. ”They Came from Beneath” räimii turpaan hitaammalla otteella kun taas ”Hellhole” luottaa kerosiininkatkuiseen menorokkiin. Levy päätetään tällaisille albumeille tyypilliseen tapaan räkäisellä rytkäisyllä ja ”Hell Rockin’ Machine” onkin pätevä ralli kertosäkeineen kaikkineen. Muut biisit ovat sitä tavallisempaa huttua, joista ainakin pisimmät viisut olisivat kaivanneet pientä tiivistämistä ja innovaatioita. Soittimia ja soittajia on taidettu voidella jos jonkinlaisilla nesteillä, sillä sen verran rempseää menoa ”Sadisticlaw” tarjoilee - etenkin rumpali Len Hellkillin paiskinnassa on mukavan irtonainen tunnelma. Basisti Hell D. Satansson hoitelee rutiininomaisesti johtavat lauluosuudet, joihin olisi voinut upottaa vielä enemmänkin räkää. Samaa voisi sanoa soundeista, jotka ovat kyllä jämerät, mutta ei mitenkään maailmoja tai stereoita mullistavia. Ketjuihin, nahkaan ja denimiin pukeutuneet demonit tulevat varmasti pitämään ”Sadisticlawsta” etenkin autoilu- ja juopottelumeiningeissä (toivottavasti ei kuitenkaan yhtä aikaa!), mutta miksikään klassikkoplätyksi ei tästä ole. Pretty straight, rocking Thrash Metal from Finland comparable to
the newest SCEPTER, MOTÖRHEAD or early VENOM offer HELLBOX on their debut full-length CD “Sadisticlaw”. The band was spawned in 1998, released four demos and I guess especially on stage their sound kicks serious ass. In comparison to Chicago-based SCEPTER HELLBOX offer more musical variation and tempo changes and will definitely capture your interest for a longer time than the Americans.
The ten pretty catchy tunes have an aedaquate raw and rocking production, the vocalist has this dirty, fucked up throat inevitable for this kind of evil oldschool Thrash / Rock and the songwriting keeps the same, high level of quality throughout the entire playing time.
To sum it up, “Sadisticlaw” is a damn good CD for fans of traditional, heavy thrashin’ Rock’n’Roll from hell that should be good for every party! Up the beercans!!! (Voices From The Darkside)

 
Hellbox is a band that doesn’t do compromises or concessions. Everything about them tells you just that. The production is Spartan to say the least. The vocals are harsh and monotonous. The riffs and song structures very much rock n’ roll based and the drums simple and straight forward. I’ll bet you a dollar to a dime they’ve listening to bands like Motorhead, Helhammer, Celtic Frost and Venom for most of their adult lives and they probably think anything that’s not played from E is gay. Sadly enough that tells us everything you need to know about them. It’s simple headbanging music for the simple headbanger. A band like this always does good on a festival with low beer prices. The ten songs on their new CD which is called ‘Sadisticlaw’ do little to amaze or to shock. It’s just metal. Period. The only thing that really sucks about this record is the sound. For a band so unendingly heavy the sound is way to frail and flat. This should feel like sledgehammer in the face but this is more a friendly pat on the shoulder.

Finland´s HELLBOX have returned with a little over 35 minutes of ensnaring, hellish and "funloving" Blackend Thrash / Heavy Metal that still follows in the same oldschool path as their previous demo, "Devileashed" had shown. I´m really glad to see that a label has dared to sign these guys because they certainly deserve the support. If you like bands like VENOM, DESASTER, SCEPTER, MOTÖRHEAD, DESTRÖYER 666 or any in that vein then you NEED to have "Sadisticlaw" in your collection or it just isn´t complete ! These 10 vicious yet simplistic songs feature the CELTIC FROSTish harsh vocals, well placed solos and a complete rocking out attitude like VENOM had in the 80s. That last point is what I like most about this band: their ability to capture the very essence of what Metal means (to me anyway) and that "attitude" simply explodes from their music and is also what I meant by mentioning "funloving" at the beginning of the review. These guys haven´t forgotten that Metal is about having a good time and partying !! Features a raw production which I think could have been turned up louder but hey, that´s what the volume button on the stereo is for. ;) This will surely fit well with your next beer bash and plenty of headbanging is guaranteed ! You may remember our review of Hellbox’s demo about a year ago, and how much we liked it. This Finnish band’s mix of metal and up-tempo punk was heavy and infectious and unbridled. Their full-length debut, Sadisticlaw, continues where the demo left off.
Take punk rockers who love Venom and old Destruction, and then throw in some admiration for Celtic Frost, and you’ve got Sadisticlaw in a nutshell. The going is energetic and punchy – not earth shaking, but definitely a very good album. Keep it up. (7.5/10) (Maelstrom)

 

Hellbox started out as a coverband. Their first demo were only Venom covers! Their love for Venom can be heard in the songs although they are combining their elements into metalrocking. Dirty metalrock with raw vocals, tempo with mood breaks and crashing guitarriffs. Nice to listen to this album in which you hear emotions of the past into a new and straight forward metal trio called Hellbox. Worth a try.
